This was the first time that the Republic of Ireland had scored more than one goal in a world cup match as they ensured qualification into o the second round with a convincing 3-0 win over the Arabians. It was a match that Robbie Keane scored for the Irish after only six minutes. Gary Breen scored a second goal for the Irish moments later to make it 2-0. The Irish sealed victory late on as Damien Duff scored a third goal for Eire.

Spain 1-1 Republic of Ireland

The Irish played out a heroic performance against Spain in this second round encounter. Fernando Morientez scored for Spain in the seventh minute. The Irish stormed back as Damien Duff was brought down in the box on the hour mark and Ian Harte took a penalty, one which he missed. The Irish continued to dominate and they earned another penalty with few minutes remaining, this time Robbie Keane held his nerve to make it 1-1 and put the match in to extra time. The Irish could not convert their penalties in the shoot out and Spain ran out 3-2 winners.
