After winning their first two matches of the Euro 96 ualification campaign, Eire went in search of three points in this match played at Belfast. John Aldridge started off the rout for the Irish, scoring in the sixth minute. Roy Keane capped off the incredible start scoring on 11 minutes to make it 2-0. The Republic of Ireland dominated the first half and with five minutes remaining of the first half, John Sheridan scored for the Irish. Eire came in to the second half playing in the same incredible fashion they were in the first half and Andy Townsend made it 4-0 for the Irish in what finished off as one of their greatest ever victories away from home.

The Irish need victory which would give them a great chance of automatic qualification for Euro 96. They dominated the first half and could have scored three or four goals on an ordinary day as Staunton, McGrath and McAteer came close for the Irish. Aldridge was in fine form and held his nerve on the penalty spot to make it 1-0 to the Irish. John Aldridge added his second goal on the 64th minute which sealed a fine win for the Irish.
