Republic of Ireland 1-0 England
Date Played – 12th June 1988 (Euro 88 match)

The opening match for the Republic of Ireland during the 1988 European championships was against England, a game everybody expected England to win. The Irish were the livelier of the two sides later on and took the lead after seven minutes when Ray Houghton capitalised on several defencive mistakes by the English to head the ball in to the net to make it 1-0. The Irish held on, however pat Bonner was in fine form making few fine saves from Gary Lineker, Mark Hateley and Glenn Hoddle. Ronnie Whelan came close to making it 2-0 as he hit the post mid way through the second half.

England 1-1 Republic of Ireland
Date Played – June 1990 (World Cup 1990)

This was certainly not the prettiest match one could have ever watched by the 1-1 draw was a fine result for the Republic of Ireland in what proved to be a physical and brutal match with the playing conditions being horrendous. Gary Lineker gave England the lead early on however Ireland could have easily equalized by half time as Tony Cascarino and Paul McGrath came close. The Irish dominated the second half and a mistake made by Steve McMahon provided Kevin Sheedy a chance of scoring with his left peg to equalize for the Irish. I
