Eire faced Spain in a thrilling match played in Dublin, a Euro 84 qualification match. The Irish got off to a great start as Ashley Grimes put them in front only in the second minute however Spain hit back as Maceda scored on the half hour mark. They went behind 3-1 after the first half interval as Matin scored an own goal on 47 minutes and Victor scored. The Irish stormed back in fine fashion towards the end of the match as Frank Stapleton grabbed two goals and earned a vital point at the end of this tough match.

The Republic of Ireland enjoyed one of their heaviest victories against Malta in Dublin. Mark Lawrenson gave the Irish the lead on 24 minutes. Frank Stapleton doubled the lead on 27 minutes from the penalty spot. O’Callaghan made it 3-0 to the Irish after 33 minutes played. The rout continued during the second half as Mark Lawrenson made it 4-0 to the Irish on 64 minutes. Kevin Sheedy scored with only 13 minutes remaining to make it 5-0. Liam Brady scored two goals in the last ten minutes to make it 7-0 before Daly made it 8-0 for the Irish with three minutes remaining. |
