This proved to be one of the finest victories ever in Irish football. They met the Russians at 3PM in Dalymount Park of Dublin and were totally convincing in victory. The Irish fielded a side that included Liam Brady, Donald Givens, Raymond Treacy, Patrick Mulligan, Joe Kinnear, Patrick Roche, James Holmes and Gerry Daly. It was probably Donald Given’s finest ever match playing for the Irish as he scored a fine hat trick, scoring in the 22nd and 30th minute in the first half and adding his third with twenty minutes left on the clock.
