The 1962 world cup qualification campaign proved to be a debacle for the Republic of Ireland as they crashed in their opening match in Glasgow against Scotland, suffering a 4-1 thrashing. In the return match in Dublin, they were condemned to a 3-0 defeat. Worse was to come when they met Czechoslovakia, a 3-1 defeat at home and an embarrassing 7-1 thrashing in Prague. The Irish began their Euro 64 campaign looking for any sort of improvement. After an encouraging 4-2 win over Iceland, they held the nation to a 1-1 draw in Reykjavik to pass through into the second round. After a very respectable 0-0 draw in Vienna, they defeated a strong Austria side 3-2 in Dublin in October 1963 and were surprisingly close to qualification for the 1964 European championships. They were finally dismantled by Spain, suffering a 5-1 defeat in Seville and following that up by a 2-0 defeat in Dublin.
