Whelan was one of the eight Man united players who was tragically killed in the Munich air disaster of 1958. he was a regular fixture in the Republic of Ireland national football team and made nearly 100 first team appearances for Manchester united between August 1955 and February 1958, scoring a very prolific 52 goals, averaging more that one goal every other match for the Reds.
